How are prayer times calculated?

Every prayer time comes from the position of the sun over your location on today's date. Dhuhr falls when the sun crosses its highest point in the sky, slightly after clock midday. Sunrise and Maghrib are the moments the sun's disc meets the horizon, allowing for atmospheric refraction.

Fajr and Isha are set by twilight: the sun must reach a certain number of degrees below the horizon. Conventions differ on that angle — the Muslim World League uses 18° for Fajr and 17° for Isha, ISNA in North America uses 15° for both, and Karachi uses 18° for both. A few degrees changes the time by several minutes, which is why methods disagree most at Fajr.

Asr is set by shadow length. In the standard (Shafi'i) convention Asr begins when an object's shadow equals its own length; in the Hanafi convention, when it equals twice its length. That puts Hanafi Asr roughly 45–60 minutes later.

Which method should I use?

The safest rule: use the method your local mosque or national Islamic authority publishes. Common conventions by region:

When in doubt, compare one day's Fajr and Maghrib against your mosque's adhan. If they match within a minute or two, your setting is right.

Why does my app show a different Fajr time?

Different apps are often both correct. A 15° Fajr angle (ISNA) produces a noticeably earlier Fajr than an 18° angle (MWL or Karachi), and switching the Asr convention shifts Asr by up to an hour. At high latitudes in summer, some apps also apply different rules for when the sun never reaches the twilight angle.

None of this is an error in the maths — it is a difference of convention. The practice most scholars and mosques recommend is simple: match the schedule of the mosque you actually pray at, and keep that setting year-round.
