Why it matters
A calendar that starts with a journey.
The companions did not count the years from the Prophet's mission, or from his death. They counted them from the Hijra, his move from Makkah to Madinah.
They chose Muharram as the first month: it is a sacred month, and it is when people come home from Hajj.

The time of Umar
Years later, Umar gathered the people to decide how to date their letters. They chose the Hijra. One report says Ali proposed it.
This date is set by the Islamic lunar calendar, not the Gregorian one. Muharram is the first month of the twelve Hijri months, and each Hijri month runs 29 or 30 days, beginning with the birth of the new moon. Twelve lunar months make a year of 354 or 355 days — about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year — so the same Islamic date lands about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.
