Why it matters
Every nation has its Eid. This is ours.
When the Prophet ﷺ came to Madinah, its people had two days of games from before Islam. He said Allah had given them two better days: the day of sacrifice and the day of breaking the fast.
Fasting on this day is not allowed. It is a day to eat, to pray together, and to be glad.

The time of Umar
Umar told the people on Eid that the Prophet ﷺ had forbidden fasting on the two Eid days.
This date is set by the Islamic lunar calendar, not the Gregorian one. Shawwal is the tenth month of the twelve Hijri months, and each Hijri month runs 29 or 30 days, beginning with the birth of the new moon. Twelve lunar months make a year of 354 or 355 days — about 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year — so the same Islamic date lands about 11 days earlier each Gregorian year.

Other communities wait for the new crescent to be seen with the eye, or follow a different country's announcement — so the day your community actually observes can sit a day either side of the estimate. Eid al-Fitr is the first day of Shawwal, so its date depends entirely on when Ramadan ends: if the Ramadan crescent counted 29 days, Eid is the next day; if 30, one day later. By the Umm al-Qura estimate Ramadan 1448 runs 29 days, putting 1 Shawwal on Tuesday 9 March 2027. Most communities confirm Eid only when the Shawwal moon is actually seen or their authority announces it, so the day can shift by one either way.
