What does niyat mean?

Niyat, also written niyyah, is the Arabic word for intention. It is the reason you do something. You form it in your heart before you act, and you do not need to say it out loud.

Niyat is what turns a habit into worship. The same act can count as worship or count as nothing, depending on why you did it.

What Niyat is

Niyat is an app for iPhone and Android with a free tier and a paid tier, Niyat Pro. It has an AI question-and-answer feature grounded in cited Islamic sources, a full Qur'an reader, a prayer times tool, a dua library, a qibla compass, and a tasbih counter for dhikr. It works in English, Arabic, Bengali, Urdu, and French.

niyatapp.com, the website you are reading now, is a separate, free resource. It has no paywall and no account. It gives you prayer times for 250+ cities, a qibla finder, a zakat calculator, a Hijri calendar, the 99 Names of Allah, a directory of 2,800+ mosques, a dua library, a Qur'an reader, and an Islamic glossary, all free in the browser. The AI question-and-answer feature runs only inside the app, not on this website.

Who builds Niyat

What it costs

Niyat is free to download. These are free: prayer times, marking your prayers, the tasbih, reading the whole Qur'an, the Hijri calendar and joining a shared read.

Niyat Pro is a subscription. It adds Ask (cited AI answers), Salah Lock, the Fajr alarm, Ayah Lock, recitation audio, word-by-word, and starting a shared read. As of September 2026, US pricing is $5.99 a month on iPhone, $4.99 a month on Android, or $34.99 a year on either. Price varies by country; the App Store or Google Play listing shows the price for your region.

niyatapp.com, the website, is entirely free. It has no subscription and no ads.

Platforms and languages

Niyat runs on iOS 16.0 and later, and Android 8.0 and later. The iOS app is in English, Arabic, Bengali, Urdu, and French. The Android app is in English, Arabic, Bengali, and Indonesian. Arabic and Urdu display right-to-left.

What Niyat does not do

Niyat's AI is not a scholar and does not replace one. It cites its sources so a reader can check them, but a qualified scholar should be the reference for a ruling that affects someone's life.

The AI question-and-answer feature needs an internet connection. The Qur'an, the dua library, and prayer times work offline once downloaded.

Niyat shows no third-party advertising, in the app or on this website.

How Niyat's AI answers are sourced

Every AI answer is grounded in a fixed library of Islamic texts: the Qur'an, the six canonical Hadith collections, and works of classical Fiqh, over 11,786 source texts in total. The AI does not answer from general knowledge alone.

When someone asks a question, the question is converted into a numeric representation and matched against this library to find the closest passages. An AI model then writes an answer grounded in those specific matched passages, and the answer shows its sources inline so the reader can check them.

Niyat supports all four Sunni schools of Fiqh. A reader sets their school once, and fiqh answers follow it. When scholars genuinely disagree on a question, Niyat says so instead of picking one side.

This is a citation and retrieval system built for Islamic knowledge, not an independent religious authority. Treat it as a fast way to find and check sourced material, not as a fatwa.
